Empowering Girls to Rise Above Adversity

Elevate Girls Ministry exists to encourage and empower girls in the Mathare Slums of Nairobi, Kenya, to rise above the hardship and adversity they face daily and to live a life for Christ.

Break the Cycle of Hardship

Girls in the Mathare Slums face daily struggles that threaten their futures. Limited resources, lack of education, and societal pressures can make it difficult for them to see a brighter path. Together, we can help them overcome these challenges and thrive.

We want these girls to know they are unique, treasured, and loved.

We want them to see that they have people in their lives that are available to listen to them, encourage them, and pray with them.

What Others Are Saying

Elevate has been more than a ministry to me. It has become a place where I find hope and love; it’s been a home away from home. Elevate gave me the courage to face my challenges with bravery. Getting yourself out of the shell that encompasses you can be quite difficult, but I am doing that all thanks to Elevate.

Being raised in the slums can be quite tough, especially for the girl child, and finding a place where you can get together and share your different experiences goes a long way in improving one’s mental health. Elevate is teaching us how to open up when we feel lost. Having great leaders who are always there to give a listening ear and encourage when possible is a wonderful feeling.

Serish (age 20)

My name is Dorothy. I am a born again Christian. I am 25 years old and I was born and raised in the Mathare Slums. As a girl child it’s not easy to survive in the streets of Mathare but I thank God that I was able to do it. I am passionate about mentoring young girls and telling them that it’s possible for them to make it in life. Elevate Girls Ministry will really be of great help for the girls in Mathare to grow spiritually and also to give them hope and remind them that they should not be defined by where they are coming from. My prayer is to see many girls transformed. I am a strong believer that any girl can make it despite where she’s from. If I did it, they can do it as well.

The Mathare Slums

Approximately 500,000 people live in an area of three square miles. They live in small shanties made of old tin and mud. For most, there are no beds, electricity, or running water. There are public toilets shared by up to 100 people and residents have to pay to use them. Those who cannot afford to pay must use the alleys and ditches between the shanties.

Given the extreme poverty and cultural traditions, most young girls grow up with little or no education, few career prospects in a male-dominated society, a lack of a maternal relationship that help them navigate the issues of becoming a young woman and a great need for spiritual input that will help them see themselves the way God does.

In Nairobi people say “Mathare, what good can come out of that place.” BUT… God is in the business of making beautiful things out of the dust. He is the light in the darkness there and he can use Elevate to reach the girls there in amazing ways.

How We Help

A group of girls coming together to encourage one another as they rise above their circumstances and grow in their faith.

We do this through Bible studies, events, mentorship, and outreach

Elevate Kits

Girls growing up in Mathare Slums face many challenges including access to basic hygiene items, such as sanitary pads, soap, and underwear, as they are simply unaffordable.

This can affect a girl’s personal hygiene, and lead to feelings of embarrassment. Elevate’s goal is to give each girl a hygiene kit at the end of each of our events.

For just $10.00 per Elevate Kit, you can help us provide these items.
